‘The Queen of Camp‘

Cher is an American singer, actress, songwriter and television personality. Born Cherilyn Sarkisian on 20th May, 1946 in El Centro, California. She has been a mainstream music icon for more than six decades, constantly reinventing her look, and is known for the extravagant costumes that she wears during her performances.

Cher has mixed heritage, her father was an Armenian-American truck driver, and her mother was an Irish, English, German and Cherokee model and actress. Her parents divorced when she was a baby and she dropped out of school and moved to Los Angeles at the age of 16.

Cher‘s career started in the 1960s and is still going strong today. She has had international success in both acting and music, and has won an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, plus three Golden Globe Awards. she has also sold over 100 million records as a solo artist, plus a further 40 million as part of the Sonny and Cher duo.

She is known for her contralto vocal range and distinctive voice, and she is often referred to as ‘The Goddess of Pop‘.
