Diana Ross

‘The First Lady of Motown‘

Diana Ross is an American singer and actress. She was born on 26th March, 1944 in Detroit, Michigan. Diana was the lead singer of the Supremes, who were to become Motown‘s most successful act in the 1960s, and also one of the world‘s best-selling girl groups of all time. She later went on to international stardom with a solo career in music, selling millions of records, and she was also a successful actress.

She was actually born Diane Earl but because her birth certificate was misspelled she became known as Diana. She grew up in the Brewster-Douglas Projects, which was a low-income housing neighbourhood of Detroit. Diana attended Cass Technical High School, where in 1959 she joined the pop-soul vocal group, the Primettes.

The Primettes eventually changed their name to the Supremes when they signed to Motown Records in 1961. Six years later in 1967 the group was renamed Diana Ross and the Supremes, which foreshadowed her move to a solo career.

In 1970 she embarked on her solo career and achieved international stardom with a collection of hit records.

She has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, been nominated for 12 Grammy‘s and an Oscar, won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and also a Tony Award.
