Donna Summer was Born LaDonna Adrian Gaines on December 31st, 1948 in Boston, Massachusetts. An American singer-songwriter who affectionately became known as the ‘Queen of Disco‘.
She sang in church and clubs around Boston and made her debut performance at the age of 10. She joined the cast of the German production of the musical ‘Hair’ at age 18, and also studied with the Vienna Folk Opera.
Her hit "Love to Love You Baby" was the first ever extended-release single. In 1977 she released the era-defining record "I Feel Love" which many acknowledge to have laid the foundations for the newly emerging electronic dance music. She notched up a top 40 hit every year from 1976 to 1984. Her single "State of Independence" released in 1982, also included Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Lionel Richie.
Donna has won 5 Grammy Awards including Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
Donna Summer was also a self-trained artist and painter and some of her artwork sold for tens of thousands of dollars.
